  10.     Every business needs to have a plan in order to track its
  11. progress.  There is no business too small, too large, too complex or
  12. too simple to avoid having a business plan.  I found that many
  13. business plan programs assume that you are going to raise money in
  14. the public markets.  However, the vast majority of businesses are
  15. started without large outside investments or fund raising campaigns.
  16. This program is designed for use by any business, large or small,
  17. whether you are raising money or not.
  18.  
  19.     I didn't write this program in an ivory tower some place, but
  20. out of my own business experience.  For seven years, I imported cuckoo
  21. clocks from the Black Forest of Germany, so this is definetly a
  22. "cuckoo" program!  I have been involved in many other business
  23. ventures.  I'd be lying if I said I made money with all of them.
  24. But I can truthfully say that all were successful, mainly because I
  25. followed a plan and stuck to it.

  27.     BUSINESS PLAN MASTER supplies you with complete template files.
  28. I give you professional formats (footnootes, tables of contents,some
  29. simple graphics), some excellent sample text and several spreadsheet
  30. files for you to use.  Alone these could save you many hundreds of
  31. hours of work.  Because of the wide diversity of businesses and
  32. business ideas, I have tried to make these files as universal as
  33. possible.  Over time, you will likely incorporate your own language
  34. into the text and make modifications to the worksheets.

  36.     I designed these as templates instead of a stand-alone program
  37. for these reasons:

  39.     1.    I want these to be as easy to use as possible.
  40.     2.    A business plan is a dynamic document needing periodic
  41.         revision and updating.
  42.     3.    Why re-invent the word processor and spreadsheet?  By using
  43.         standard formats ANYONE can write a very professional
  44.         business plan.

  64. Requirements

  66.     Any PC with a word processing or page layout program and a
  67. spreadsheet program.  These files are designed for use by those with
  68. a basic (not advanced) knowledge of word processing and
  69. spreadsheets.

  71.     I am partial to laser printers, but it is not a requirement
  72. UNLESS you are planning to present this plan to venture capitalists
  73. or other sophisticated investors.

  76. QUICK START

  79.     If you want to get started right away, just read these few lines:
  80.  
  81.     FIRST, take a look at what is here.
  82.  
  83.     Get into your word processing program.
  84.  
  85.     Open the BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file, either BIZPLN13.WP
  86. (WordPerfect 5.1), or BIZPLN13.DOC (ASCII text).  This is the main
  87. BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file which will contain the verbiage you will
  88. use.
  89.  
  90.     Open the spreadsheets in your spreadsheet program.  The best file to
  91. look at first is BPMPROF.WK1.  I highly recommend that you do your
  92. spreadsheet work first.  Make sure your business idea is going to be
  93. profitable before trying to write the textual portion.

  95.     If you are now hopelessly lost, take a look at the User's Guide.
  96. By registering at the *PROFESSIONAL* level, I send you a printed
  97. User's Guide along with other valuable items.

  106. 5.1.  The spreadsheet files are in Lotus (*.wk1) format.  The Lotus
  107. files can be opened with Lotus 2.2 or higher.  Most other

  175.     Shareware describes a method of distributing copyrighted
  176. software in which a user is allowed to fully evaluate the software
  177. before purchasing it.  After an evaluation period, the user is
  178. required to register the product if s/he decides to keep using it.

  180.     Shareware distribution addresses all of the legitimate
  181. complaints that users have with commercial software distribution.
  182.  
  183.   o Shareware allows a user to fully evaluate a product, free of charge, in
  184.     his or her home, *before* deciding to buy it.
  185.     
  186.   o Shareware programs can circulate freely on Bulletin Boards, through
  187.     Shareware disk distributors, or through user groups.

  189.   o Because Shareware distribution reduces the need to advertise, Shareware
  190.     is less expensive than commercial software.

  192.   o Shareware authors can often be more responsive to users' requests for
  193.     help or bug fixes than large software companies.

  195.   o Shareware software, needless to say, is never copy-protected.

  198.     In short, Shareware is a user's dream come true.  Users show
  199. their appreciation to developers for this extremely flexible
  200. distribution scheme by registering their software.  Without user
  201. registrations Shareware software would gradually disappear.  It is
  202. not sufficient to simply let the "other guy" pay the registration.
  203. You are the other guy's "other guy".

  209.     Shareware is not "free" software.  Shareware is not Public
  210. Domain software.  The fee that you may have paid to receive a
  211. Shareware program does not mean that the software has been paid for.
  212. This money was paid to a Shareware disk vendor, User Group, Bulletin
  213. Board Service or retailer to cover their cost of getting the program
  214. to you.  Shareware software is paid for by registering your copy
  215. with the author.

  224.     BUSINESS PLAN MASTER has been under development for over three
  225. years.  During that period it has been in constant use by its
  226. author.  BUSINESS PLAN MASTER was originally developed for the IBM
  227. PC.  It was later ported to run on Apple Macintosh computers.  The
  228. development now is done concurrently, wherever I feel like working
  229. on a particular day.

  254. well-known German perfectionism has rubbed off on me!  I have
